INTERIM STATEMENT
On 9th April 2016 at 18:18 h, a Boeing 737-500 with nationality and registration marks 5N-BLG, a domestic scheduled commercial flight, operated by Aero Contractors Company of Nigeria Ltd. as flight NIG316 veered off runway 18R to the right of the centreline into the grass verge at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Nigeria.
The flight originated from Port Harcourt (PHC) DNPO and the destination was Lagos (LOS) DNMM.
Weather information indicated rain overhead the station with a visibility of 3,000 m. During ILS approach on runway 18L, at an altitude of about 500 ft, the crew executed a missed approach due strong crosswind. The crew requested for runway 18R with weather information indicated 090/15 kt with a visibility of 3,000 m in moderate rain.
The second approach appeared stable but on closing the throttles, the aircraft veered off the runway to the right of the centreline into the grass verge, with increase in intensity of rain associated with obscured and reduced visibility to the crew. All 59 passengers onboard the airplane, including five crew disembarked with no injuries.
